Capturing the Moment
“You dont make a photograph with just a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved” Ansel Adams
My name is Shirley and I currently live in South Yorkshire, in a small village on the edge of Sheffield!
Although I have been taking photographs since I was a child I only began to develop my skills in 2008. Since then I have exhibited my photographs nationally and internationally and been awarded medals, awards and distinctions for my work, most notably ARPS from the Royal Photographic Society, AFIAP in recognition of the number of images accepted into International exhibitions and a London Salon of Photography medal in 2016. I have held solo exhibitions at the Royal Photographic Society Headquarters in Bath, at Howard Hall in Letchworth and also exhibited in a number of galleries in Bedfordshire.
Lockdown created many challenges and opportunities. As with most clubs, the club I belonged to adapted its meetings, embracing Zoom. This was a positive experience as we were able to listen to speakers from further afield, which stirred our creative juices. Personally I tried creating cyanotypes and making my own photo books using techniques learnt online, started to create audio visual presentations and undertaken some remote studio photo shoots.
I enjoy being out with my camera planning the composition and using the appropriate settings to create the image I have in my mind, sometimes I will use ICM (Intentional camera movement) which gets me some very strange looks and you will often find me lying on the floor to get that different perspective…more strange looks! However I will also edit my images on my computer and enjoy recreating the image, adding textures, using layers or manipulating the image .
Since moving to Sheffield I have joined the wonderful Christian family at Christ Church Dore and have been exploring ways to create images that resonate with my faith, that express God’s love and bring a sense of the beauty of His creation. I tend to work in projects so some of my work is presented in this website under the Project tab at the top of my website.
